Hi Boris. Can you tell me anything about the origin of the Masis family name? Incidentaly, I was born in Central America of centralamerican parents…I have no idea how the name got here or where it is from

Thanks! I have found some Masis people currently in Lithuania and Armenia. As well some references to masis in Barcelona around the 1700’s, not any later. In Costa Rica there are Masis as far as 1680 in the baptismal records of the city of Cartago. According to some historica, records the latinamerican version of Masis might be of sephardic origin. Still, it remains a mistery, and the references are too spread out geographically to actually reach a conclusion (or afford to do it).

I don’t know the origin of the Masis name for sure, however my best guess is that it may trace back to a mountain in Turkey, see http://www.masis.am/ and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Ararat
I have gotten several emails from people with the same last name in South and Central America as well. :)
